How do tumbled pavers compare to smooth pavers for Ottawa patios?

The choice between tumbled and smooth pavers is partly aesthetic and partly practical, and Ottawa's climate tilts the practical side in some interesting ways. Both types are manufactured from the same concrete mix and are structurally identical in terms of strength. The difference is in the finishing process. The one exception is if you use cheap rock salt with impurities, which can stain smooth pavers more visibly than tumbled ones simply because the smooth surface shows discolouration more readily.

Aesthetically, the two create very different feels. Smooth pavers in clean geometric patterns suit modern and contemporary homes, which are increasingly common in newer Ottawa developments like Riverside South, Arcadia, and Half Moon Bay. They look sharp with linear furniture, outdoor kitchens, and minimalist landscaping.
