The best paver base system for Ottawa's clay soil is a deep granular base using Granular A limestone, installed in compacted lifts over a properly prepared subgrade. This isn't a matter of preference or opinion among experienced Ottawa contractors. These systems use uniformly sized crushed stone that creates large void spaces for water drainage. They excel at preventing water retention under the patio, which is valuable in our freeze-thaw environment. However, they demand more precise installation because the loose material can shift if not properly confined. Open-graded systems also typically require a thicker overall base depth, around 12-15 inches, which means more excavation on Ottawa's clay.
